KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has urged Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to stop targeting Russian diesel infrastructure, saying the attacks are contributing to a global fuel shortage. Reuters reported that Trump made the remarks while speaking to reporters during a visit to the Irish Open in Doonbeg, Ireland. “Mr. Zelenskyy has to do one thing: He has to stop knocking out diesel fuel in Russia,” Trump said. “We spoke to Mr. Zelenskyy about it. There are plenty of other targets. Don’t hit diesel fuel. That’s hurting the world,” he added. Trump said the global fuel shortage was being caused by the Russia-Ukraine war rather than the conflict in the Middle East. Ukraine has carried out long-range drone strikes on Russian oil refineries in recent months, reducing fuel production and contributing to gasoline shortages in Russia, according to Reuters. Ukraine, which faces regular Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure, says Russian refineries are legitimate military targets. The US national average diesel price rose above $6 per gallon for the first time on Thursday, according to GasBuddy. Diesel is widely used by trucks, trains, ships and agricultural machinery. Russia has also downgraded its 2026 oil-production forecast to a 17-year low and revised its fuel-export outlook for 2026 and 2027, according to a government draft forecast seen by Reuters.
