KABUL (Pajhwok): The US Democratic Party has won control of both chambers of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections, ending the Republican Party’s majority in the House of Representatives and Senate. According to CBS News, Democrats have so far secured 218 seats in the House, compared with 134 for Republicans, crossing the threshold required to secure a majority. Democrats overturned the Republicans’ previous majority by winning several competitive congressional districts, the report said. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives were contested, with either party needing at least 218 seats to secure a majority. Democrats defeated Republican candidates in several states, including Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Colorado and North Carolina, according to the report. In North Carolina, Democrats won a seat that had been held by Republicans for more than 15 years. The Democratic gains came amid rising living costs, economic concerns among voters, the war involving Iran and President Donald Trump’s trade tariffs, which were among the key issues shaping the election campaign. The shift in control of Congress is expected to alter the balance of power in Washington and make it more difficult for the Trump administration to advance its agenda and pass legislation. Democrats also secured a majority in the US Senate, regaining control of the upper chamber.
