KABUL (Pajhwok): The United States says it has targeted Iran’s military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and air defence systems in its latest strikes. Meanwhile, the Iranian army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) say they have attacked US military bases in Kuwait and Jordan in response. In a statement, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said it carried out a fresh wave of strikes on Iran at 9:00am Eastern Time on Tuesday. It said US forces targeted Iran’s military command centres, maritime capabilities, missile and drone launch sites and air defence systems in an effort to reduce the country’s ability to attack commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The command claimed commercial shipping continued to pass through the strategic international waterway. The statement said: “Since the beginning of May, US forces have facilitated the transit of around 900 commercial vessels carrying 450 million barrels of crude oil.” Meanwhile, the IRGC said in a statement that, during the second phase of the 24th wave of Operation Nasr 2, it had launched missile and drone strikes overnight on a long-range US radar base, a communications and satellite reception centre and a US missile defence radar site in Kuwait, destroying the facilities.
