23 dead, 80 injured in Nuristan flash foods — Pajhwok

KABUL (Pajhwok): At least 23 people have lost their lives, 80 others injured and around 100 remain missing after flash floods swept through eastern Nuristan province, the National Disaster Management and Preparedness Authority (NDMPA) said on Tuesday. The floods swept through Parun, the provincial capital, on Monday afternoon, causing casualties and widespread damage to homes, businesses and infrastructure. Qari Taj Mohammad Hemat, spokesperson for the NDMPA, said: “So far, 23 of our compatriots have been martyred, the bodies of 15 victims have been recovered, 80 people have been injured, and around 100 others remain missing. Seven houses have been completely destroyed, 23 houses have been partially damaged, 70 shops have been destroyed, 40 large and small vehicles have been damaged, and 11 hotels have been completely or partially destroyed.” He said the figures were preliminary and could change as search, rescue and damage assessment operations continued. Hemat added that a delegation had travelled from Kabul to Nuristan to assess the situation in Parun and coordinate relief efforts.
