KABUL (Pajhwok): The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) and the Ministry of Urban Development and Housing (MoUDH) have agreed to establish a joint technical committee to strengthen cooperation and improve the implementation of development projects. In a statement, the ministry said Acting Minister Mullah Najibullah Hayat Haqqani met UNAMA Deputy Special Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator Bruno Lemarquis at his office in Kabul. Lemarquis briefed the minister on UNAMA’s activities and upcoming programmes. He said UNAMA was ready to expand cooperation in providing shelter for returning refugees, developing clean water supply networks, building residential townships and supporting urban planning. For his part, Haqqani thanked the United Nations and other partner organisations for their cooperation and briefed the meeting on progress regarding Kabul’s master plan, the New Kabul City project and measures taken for the permanent settlement of returning refugees. He said nearly 70,000 residential plots had been distributed to returning refugees over the past few months. Haqqani also stressed the need to provide schools, roads, clean water networks and other essential services alongside housing for returnees.
