KABUL (Pajhwok): The death toll from recent flash floods in eastern Nuristan province has risen to 24, including the provincial mayor and a battalion commander, while 85 others have been injured, an official said on Thursday. The floods swept through Paron, the provincial capital, and surrounding areas on Tuesday, causing heavy human and financial losses. Hamdullah Fitrat, deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, said in a post on X that the government institutions had been engaged in rescue operations since the first day of the disaster and would continue providing assistance to affected people. “According to the latest available information, 24 of our compatriots, including the mayor of Nuristan and a battalion commander, have been martyred, while 85 others have been injured,” he said. Fitrat expressed sympathy with the families of the victims, wished the injured a speedy recovery and offered condolences to those who lost loved ones. He also called on traders and wealthy individuals to support flood victims and stand with affected families during the difficult period. Fitrat further urged people to avoid living or conducting business in areas vulnerable to flooding.
