KABUL (Pajhwok): The Kremlin has said Armenia may face a choice between pursuing closer ties with the European Union and maintaining its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union. Russian news agency Interfax reported that Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in an interview with Izvestia, said Armenia’s current leadership was presenting the issue as a choice between the two blocs. “We know that the current Armenian leadership is artificially trying to put the country at a crossroads and make it choose whether to move towards Europe or the Eurasian Economic Union,” Peskov was quoted as saying. Peskov also said Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union was beneficial to the country. The remarks come amid discussions between Armenia and Russia over Yerevan’s efforts to deepen relations with the European Union while remaining a member of the Eurasian Economic Union. Armenia has maintained close economic ties with the Eurasian Economic Union, while its relations with the European Union have also been developing, making the issue a point of discussion between Yerevan and Moscow.
