KABUL (Pajhwok): New York City’s public schools will temporarily ban elementary and middle school students from using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools during the upcoming school year, the Associated Press reported. Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the one-year moratorium on Wednesday. It covers student-facing generative AI software for students through the eighth grade, with the mayor’s office describing it as the most expansive such prohibition in the United States. Meanwhile, all public high school students will receive AI literacy classes twice a year, while selected students will be allowed to use some AI platforms under teacher supervision. Companion chatbots will be prohibited across all grades. The move comes as schools across the US seek to teach students how to use AI while limiting overreliance on the technology and preventing academic cheating. City education officials will also review technology used across the school system and remove tools deemed nonessential to learning. New York City public school students are scheduled to return to classrooms next week.
