2 killed, 9 injured in vehicle attack in France — Pajhwok

KABUL (Pajhwok): Two people have been killed and nine others injured after a driver deliberately rammed his vehicle into a group of people in the French city of Caen, officials said. The incident took place late Wednesday night near a bar in Caen, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP). The driver fled the scene after hitting the group. Caen Prosecutor Joël Garrigue said the incident was not being treated as terrorism and that investigations were under way to establish the motive behind the attack. According to the prosecutor, the suspect is a 26-year-old Russian national of Chechen origin. He allegedly got into an altercation with several people before driving his vehicle into a group of about 10 young people of different nationalities, including Afghans. Garrigue said evidence and witness accounts indicated that the driver had not tried to avoid the group. Instead, he appeared to have changed the direction of the vehicle in order to hit the people. French authorities said a 35-year-old Afghan man died at the scene. A 28-year-old man, who was believed to be an Afghan national, later died in hospital. The nine injured people are men aged between 17 and 36, according to officials.
