KABUL (Pajhwok): More than 1,300 flights have been cancelled in Shanghai and hundreds of thousands of people evacuated from high-risk areas as Typhoon Dolphin approaches parts of China, according to a media report on Sunday. The Associated Press reported that Shanghai’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports cancelled more than 1,300 flights, or around 60 percent of scheduled flights, for Sunday. Before approaching China, the typhoon brought heavy rainfall to northern Taiwan, including the capital Taipei, on Saturday. Several Taiwanese airlines also cancelled flights to China on Sunday. The typhoon had sustained winds of around 162 kilometres per hour on Sunday morning and was expected to reach Zhejiang province and northern parts of neighbouring Fujian province later in the day. Chinese meteorologists forecast 200 to 400 millimetres of rain in some areas over the coming days, raising the risk of severe flooding and landslides. Authorities issued particular warnings about the risk of landslides in Zhejiang. Meanwhile, Zhejiang authorities evacuated around 390,000 people from high-risk areas in Taizhou city on Saturday evening. In Shanghai, more than 30,000 people were also moved to safety. Zhejiang authorities suspended all water-related activities, including passenger ferry services and recreational trips, due to the risks posed by the typhoon.
