KABUL (Pajhwok): US President Donald Trump has sent a proposed civilian nuclear energy agreement with Saudi Arabia to the US Congress for review, Reuters reported. A US official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the agreement, reached in July, would allow US companies to export civilian nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia. “The president’s position has not changed: the agreement will only move forward if Saudi Arabia joins the Abraham Accords,” the official said, referring to US-brokered agreements aimed at normalising relations between Israel and Arab and Muslim-majority countries. Congress has 90 days to review the agreement. If lawmakers do not reject it within that period, the agreement will take effect. Trump could veto a congressional rejection, while overriding such a veto would require a two-thirds majority in Congress. The 30-year agreement would provide for the construction of AP1000 nuclear reactors in a project estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. Some Democratic lawmakers and nuclear non-proliferation advocates have criticised the deal, saying it would not prevent Saudi Arabia from enriching uranium or reprocessing nuclear waste. The Trump administration said the agreement contains nuclear non-proliferation measures required by US law.
