Economy minister, UNDP representative discuss development cooperation — Pajhwok

KABUL (Pajhwok): Economy Minister Qari Din Mohammad Hanif and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Afghanistan Turhan Saleh have discussed expanding development cooperation, supporting the private sector and implementing infrastructure projects, the Ministry of Economy said. According to a ministry statement, Hanif wished Salehsuccess in his new position and expressed hope that his professional experience would help expand development cooperation and address Afghanistan’s economic and social challenges. Referring to the country’s economic situation, Hanifhighlighted security, the implementation of development projects, increased domestic production and the stability of the afghani. He also identified continued sanctions, the freezing of Afghanistan’s foreign exchange reserves, the United Nations’ non-recognition of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan government and the suspension of international development assistance as major obstacles to economic development. He cited climate change and the large-scale return of migrants as factors adding to economic and social pressures on the population. He stressed the need to build shelters, roads, schools, clinics and water supply networks in residential townships for returnees. Hanif said infrastructure and production projects could create jobs, increase household incomes, reduce poverty and promote sustainable economic growth.
