KABUL (Pajhwok): The governor of western Herat and the World Health Organization (WHO) representative in Afghanistan have stressed the need to expand and effectively implement the polio vaccination programme to prevent the spread of the disease. In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Herat governor’s office said Governor Sheikh Maulana Islamjar met with Edwin Salvador, the WHO representative in Afghanistan, in Herat. According to the statement, the two sides discussed healthcare activities in Herat province and the western region of the country. They also underscored the importance of expanding and effectively implementing the polio vaccination programme, describing it as a key priority for preventing poliomyelitis. Expressing appreciation for the WHO’s continued support, Governor Islamjar urged the organisation to procure its required materials and equipment from Afghan-made products whenever possible, in accordance with relevant regulations, saying the move would support local producers and strengthen the country’s manufacturing sector.
