KABUL (Pajhwok): The Turkmen government has reviewed progress on the TAPI gas pipeline project and stressed the need to accelerate its implementation. Trend news agency reported on Monday, citing a statement from Turkmenistan’s state-owned Turkmenneft company, that the issue was discussed at a meeting of the country’s oil and gas sector. The meeting reviewed the performance of Turkmenistan’s oil and gas sector during the first seven months of 2026. Officials from Turkmenneft, Turkmengaz, Turkmengeology, the TAPI Pipeline Company and several affiliated institutions presented their reports. The statement said particular attention was given to construction of the main section of the TAPI pipeline along the Serhetabat-Herat route, with participants stressing the need to implement the project in line with international standards. The meeting also discussed expanding exploration and drilling, increasing oil and natural gas production, and improving the quality of extracted resources, the report said. The TAPI project is one of the region’s largest gas transmission projects. It is designed to transport Turkmenistan’s natural gas through Afghanistan to Pakistan and India. The approximately 1,800-kilometre pipeline is expected to transport 33 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. The project is considered a major regional infrastructure initiative and is expected to contribute to economic development and create employment opportunities in Afghanistan.
