PARAKH (Pajhwok): Local officials in central Panjshir say a turquoise mine has been identified for the first time in Anaba district, and a technical team sent to the site to conduct a survey, collect samples and assess the quantity and quality of its reserves. Saifuddin Laton, spokesman for the Panjshir governor, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the mine was identified by local residents in Anaba district. He said the Panjshir Department of Mines and Petroleum, following a request from local residents, had assigned a technical and specialized team to survey the site, collect samples and assess its deposits. Laton added that after completing the technical assessment, the team would determine the quantity and quality of the turquoise reserves. If the findings are confirmed and the legal procedures are completed, extraction would be permitted in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. Local officials say emerald, tourmaline, green garnet and around 17 other types of mineral deposits have so far been identified in Panjshir, with extraction activities underway at most of them. The Panjshir local administration says it considers expanding mining activities part of its efforts to promote economic growth and increase residents’ incomes. Turquoise is a valuable ornamental stone whose colour ranges from blue to blue-green and green. It has been used for thousands of years in jewellery and decorative items.
