KABUL (Pajhwok): Deputy Minister of Public Health Mawlawi Abdul Wali Haqqani has welcomed the donation of four mammography units by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to Afghanistan’s National Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Hospital. In a statement, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said the equipment was handed over to the deputy minister during a ceremony attended by ministry officials and the WHO representative in Afghanistan. Haqqani thanked the WHO for the donation, saying the mammography units would help doctors at the National Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Hospital detect breast cancer at an early stage. He said breast cancer was among the most common cancers affecting women worldwide, including in Afghanistan, and affected thousands of families every year. He added the new equipment would not only improve the quality of diagnostic and treatment services but also give greater hope to women with breast cancer by enabling specialists to detect the disease in its early stages and provide timely treatment. The ministry also stressed the importance of continued cooperation with the WHO, saying such collaboration had played a significant role in improving the quality of healthcare services, strengthening the capacity of health workers, combating communicable and non-communicable diseases, supporting vaccination programmes and improving maternal and child health.
