KABUL (Pajhwok): Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has criticised recent economic threats by US officials against Tehran, saying President Donald Trump’s reference to an “economic D-Day” was aimed at diverting attention from the country’s financial challenges. On Thursday, Trump warned that any country providing Iran with “any kind of economic lifeline” would face economic consequences from the United States. Iran’s IRNA news agency reported that Araghchi, in a post on X, responded to the US threats by sharing two images showing that US national debt had surpassed $40 trillion. Araghchi said the so-called “economic D-Day” was an attempt to shift attention away from the US domestic financial situation, record debt and rising interest costs. “Continuing failed policies will only lead to further failure and greater hostility from Iranians,” he was quoted as saying. He also accused the United States of using what he called “economic terrorism,” saying such policies threaten the global economy and the sovereignty of countries around the world.
