KABUL (Pajhwok): Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has emphasised the importance of the Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan railway project, known as the Trans-Afghan railway, for connecting Central Asia with South Asia. He made the remarks during a meeting with Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in Bishkek on Monday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, Pakistani media reported. The report said Sharif called for swift progress on the joint feasibility study of the project, saying the railway could connect Uzbekistan to Pakistan’s seaports through Afghanistan. The Pakistani prime minister also stressed greater use of existing multimodal transport routes and said Pakistan was ready to facilitate Uzbekistan’s trade through its ports and transport infrastructure. The Uzbekistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan railway, or Trans-Afghan railway, is considered one of the region’s key transit projects, aimed at linking Central Asia with South Asia and Pakistan’s seaports through Afghanistan.
